Single crystals of KHCO 3  and KHSO 4  have been investigated by solid state high resolution proton magnetic resonance techniques. These compounds may be considered as model systems for compounds that contain abundant quadrupolar nuclei ( 39 K) with small magnetogyric ratio in ad-dition to the protons. Despite considerable line broadening resulting from  1 H- 39 K dipole-dipole coupling, all four possible proton shielding tensors in KHSO 4  , and an averaged shielding tensor for the two different proton sites in KHCO 3  could be measured accurately. The results are analysed to determine the degree of ionization of the protons in the three types of hydrogen bonds occuring in KHCO 3  and KHSO 4 .
