Paper samples impregnated with aqueous solutions of iron sulphate (FeSO 4 ) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl 3 ) or with a brushed on layer of iron(III) hexacyanoferrate (II) [Prussian blue] were studied after moist heat ageing (80°C and 65% RH according to ISO 5630-3: 1996) for damage caused by iron ions and iron ferrocyanide. First, we found that water-soluble iron ions in the paper brushed with iron ferrocyanide increased by moist heat ageing. It is highly possible that these released iron ions to the paper accelerate its deterioration by catalytic oxidation. In fact, the folding endurance and paper cellulose’s degree of polymerisation (DP) on samples brushed with iron ferrocyanide decrease faster than those of untreated paper. From these results it was concluded that Fe ions released from iron ferrocyanide accelerate the paper deterioration.
