Software agent platforms have enjoyed a broad interest in the last 20 years from many parts of computer science research and industry. In the previous sections of this survey we discussed the impact of platform design on agent systems and proposed a categorization of agents and their platforms, identifying intelligent agents, mobile agents, and simulation agents as the main branches of agent technology. This article is the last part of a three-part survey on agent platform technology. We now present the numbers of our survey on platforms. Also, we comment on recent trends in software engineering. Michael Zapf: E-Mail: Michael.Zapf@th-nuernberg.de 1 Agent platforms in numbers In the first part of our survey we introduced three classes of agent technology: multi-agent and intelligent agent systems, mobile agent systems, and simulation agent systems. In the second part we commented on standardization efforts and identified two major endeavors, the MAF and FIPA standard. Also, we presented three agent platforms that are significant for each of these classes. We now take a quantitative look at the history of agent platform engineering in the last two decades. We analyzed the evolution of the agent platform technology by the number of available platforms over the years, the life time of platforms, the relative weight of the categories, and adoption of standards.
