Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird Knut Wicksell anläßlich seines 150. Geburtstages gewürdigt. Zunächst wird Wicksells Leben und Werk kurz vorgestellt, bevor auf seine zentralen Leistungen für die Theorie der Besteuerung eingegangen wird. Das von Wicksell entwickelte Prinzip der Einstimmigkeit ist Grundlage einer ökonomischen Vertragstheorie, mit der dem Bürger Möglichkeiten von Kooperationsvorteilen aufgrund der Bereitstellung bestimmter öffentlicher Leistungen aufgezeigt werden können.
