The photocatalytic degradation of atrazine herbicide has been investigated using nanosized iron under simulated solar irradiation. Atrazine, as such, is degraded at acidic pH values within a 2 hr period as detected by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total elimination of Cl -  under light proceeds at longer times needing about 25 hr. Total organic carbon analysis (TOC) showed that about 25% of the initial carbon content remains in solution after all the Cl -  has been eliminated. This indicates the generation of long lived intermediates during the degradation process. The products of degradation in solution after 3 hr have been identified as Cl - , NO 3  CO 2 , C 2 H 6 , H 2 , desethylatrazine and 2-chloro-4,6-diamine-1,3,5-triazine. The last two products have HPLC retention times close to atrazine. The initial rate of degradation was observed to be pseudo-first order in substrate. Photodegradation of atrazine was faster at more acidic pH values suggesting the intervention of Fenton like reactions during the degradation process. The most important factors controlling the rate of atrazine degradation were: the nature, preparation and surface area of the iron used.
