The appraisal and evaluation of the 16 th  century poet Hans Sachs is dominated by stereotypes and often made without knowledge of the texts. The edition of the complete works edited by Adelbert von Keller and Edmund Goetze (1870–1908), which is still in use today, perpetuates these stereotypes and devalues the poet. On the groundwork of various aspects (order, paratexts, variance, errors, normalisation), objections to the edition are discussed and suggestions are made as to what a new edition should look like.
