Therapeutic responses of 44 patients with weII differentiated thyroid carcinona who had received II 3 I therapy were evaluated. Thirty patients had papillary carcinoma andfourteen withfollicular carcinotna. Of these, 1 I % patients had uetastases to regional nodes and 11% had distant rnetastoses. II3I therapy with the dose of 80 trrCi was given to 24 patients with papillary carcinoma and 10 patients withfollicular carcinotnq who had no dista,rt ,netastases. Patients with distant ,netastases consisting of 6 patients with papillary carcinoma and 4 patients withfollicular carcinomawere treatedwith l0O nCi I-131. Of the patients with papillary carcinoma successful ablation was obtained in 58% patients with a 8O rnCi initial dose and increased to 79% patients after the second dose. Metastatic control was obtained in 33 % patients with lM nCi and increased to 67% patients after the second dose. Of the patients withfollicular carcinotna, successful ablation was obtained in 70% patients and increased to 80% patients after the second dose. Metastatic control was obtained in 50% patients afierthe seconddose. It is assutnedthat fficacy of ablationwith 8O nÊias initial dose is higher inpatientswithfollicular carcinoma than the papillary type, while the ,netastatic lesions in both histologic types should be treated with more additional doses of IOO mCi.
