This study aimed at evaluating the quality of nursing records of a privately-owned hospital in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is a descriptive study on the basis of retrospective documentary analysis made out of secondary worksheets used by the charts' commission, referring to seventy-two medical records from September, 2010 to March, 2011. Five items were analyzed: admission, peripheral venous access, pain, internal transfers, and complications. The sub-items related to each item were analyzed on the basis of a scoring standard, by which sub-items with incidence up to 90% are ranked as excellent; those between 80-89% are good; those between 70-79% are average; and those below 70% are poor. Out of the 22 sub-items evaluated, 53.3% had excellent and good levels. Special attention should be given to records pertaining to pain, venous access, and history of allergy which had poor rating, even though they are extremely relevant in the management of nursing care.
