Previous research shows effects of advice from Voting Advice Applications (VAAs) on party choice. These could be spurious because antecedent factors like habitual voting, issue voting and campaign effects may both affect the obtained VAA advice and final party choice. Three-wave panel surveys and media content data for the Dutch national election campaigns of 2010 and 2012 are employed here to isolate genuine VAA effects. The results reveal strong effects of VAA advice, especially on politically unsophisticated voters doubting between multiple parties. VAA influence is strong for parties that a VAA user considered already based on no less and no more than just a few antecedent factors. Without any other antecedent factors that promote a vote for a party, that party will usually not be advised by a VAA, but with an abundance of other promoting factors voters tend to vote for that party even without advice from a VAA
