Linking the Penrosean resource-based view (RBV) to firm's mode choice decision for entering into international markets, this paper proposes a dynamic model of mode choice based on the Penrosean resource-based theory. Specifically, the model suggests that firm's managerial resource developed for a particular mode (e.g., international acquisitions or alliances) in the past will affect the firm's subsequent choice of governance mode in the future. An empirical test based on a sample ofU.S .. firrns' international strategic combination activities generally supported the adequacy of the proposed Penrosean model.

Global Managerial Resources and the Choice of Entry Mode for International Expansion: A Test of Penrosean Resource-Based Perspective
