Two teams of students from last semester’s “Passive to Active” design course at Carnegie Mellon University, taught by Nierenberg Professor of Design Shelley Evenson (who aided in the design of interactions magazine), recently won first and second place awards in the Phillips “From Active to Passive” design competition. The competition drew entries from the U.S., Canada, Singapore and South Africa, and challenged entrants to come up with innovative solutions to managing (and even leveraging) the increasing complexity associated with interacting with TV sets. Each entry was judged on three criteria: interaction/screen design, technical feasibility and human factors. Each team conducted field research (observed families in their homes, watching or not watching TV), developed a design framework based on the results of the field research, developed three concept directions (which were presented to each other and other professionals), and then narrowed down the concepts into one final design direction that they tested with real users. They refined their concepts based on the results of the user testing and produced models, interactive prototypes and a video describing their process. First-place winners were Parallax team members Heather Alexander, Jay Miolla, Mark Prommel and Laura Varacchi. Second place winners were Seigneur team members Rachael Nass, Kimberly Toda and David Rollins. Philips is also a Contributing Sponsor for the upcoming CHI98 conference.
