This paper presents the design objective of a general purpose computer which is intended to serve as a component in special purpose systems. Some of the design considerations applied toward meeting these objectives are also presented. The significance of the use of magnetostrictive delay memories in a low-cost computer as well as the approach used to minimize the active elements in a flexible computer input/output system are discussed.
