Inflation arises in supersymmetric grand unified theories (susy GUTs) withoutfine tuning and cosmic strings usually form at the end of inflation. Hence bothstrings and inflation contribute to the density perturbations in the very earlyuniverse which lead to structure formation and to CMB anisotropies.
