An overview is given of theoretical progress on self-organization at thenanoscale in reactive systems of heterogeneous catalysis observed by fieldemission microscopy techniques and at the molecular scale in copolymerizationprocesses. The results are presented in the perspective of recent advances innonequilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, allowing us tounderstand how nanosystems driven away from equilibrium can manifestdirectionality and dynamical order.
