Stained preparations of Pseudomonas methanica present a peculiar mottled appearance due to the presence of conspicuous sudanophilic granules (Harrington and Kallio, 1960). In the studies on the utilization of methanol by P. methanica some attention was directed toward elucidating the nature of stored lipid in 3to 4-day-old cells. The study was originally oriented toward analysis of ether-soluble material, but the establishment of poly-,B-hydroxybutyrate as a general storage product in a variety of bacterial cells led us to study chloroform-soluble etherinsoluble components of P. methanica as well. Relevant literature pertaining to poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid is summarized by Doudoroff and Stanier (1959).
