Friction stir welding is an appropriate joining technique to join metals and non metals especially soft alloys and that too without defects. Recently, in many industrial applications such as, in automotive, marine and aerospace, magnesium alloys are used widely due to their excellent mechanical properties and light weight. In the present research, Friction stir welded joints of AZ31B magnesium alloy plates were fabricated. The effect of varying the plunge depth on the resulting temperature distribution, microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded specimens were evaluated. Temperature distributions were plotted for different zones of the welded specimens. The grains in the weld nugget were found to be fine and equiaxed due to recrystallization and severe plastic deformation. Tensile strength of the welded specimens was found to be lower as compared to the base material
