Scientific output varies between research fields and between disciplineswithin a field such as astrophysics. Even in fields where publication is theprimary output, there is considerable variation in publication and hence incitation rates. Data from the Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System is usedto illustrate this problem and argue against a "one size fits all" approach toperformance metrics, especially over the short time-span covered by theResearch Assessment Exercise (soon underway in the UK).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, appeare
