SUMMARY.  Combining different treatment modalities – such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy – is often utilized to treat patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer. However, it remains controversial how best to combine these modalities to provide patients with the greatest chance of cure. This review discusses recent studies in this field and outlines promising versus less promising therapeutic strategies.
