A single crystal of Ba 0.9 Ce 0.1 LuAl 0.2 Si 3.8 N 6.9 O 0.1 (barium cerium lutetium aluminosilicate nitride oxide) was obtained by heating a mixed powder of Ba 3 N 2 , Si 3 N 4 , Al, Lu 2 O 3 , and CeO 2 at 2173 K for 1 h under N 2 gas at 0.85 MPa. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the title oxynitride is hexa-gonal (lattice constants: a = 6.0378 (5) Å, c = 9.8133 (9) Å; space group: P 6 3  mc ) and isostructural with BaYbSi 4 N 7 . (Ba,Ce) and Lu atoms occupy twelvefold and sixfold coordination sites, respectively.
