Thomas George Cowling was born in Hackney, east London, the second son of George and Edith Eliza (née Nicholls). Several years ago, at his request, my wife did some genealogical research into his ancestry. She found that his grandparents and their antecedents were nearly all artisans, blue-collar workers or servants from London and the home counties: the men including a cabman, a dock clerk, a milkman, a bellows-maker, a tallow-chandler, a shoemaker and two weavers, the women a housemaid and a boot-binder. One great-great-grandfather was a Cornish naval sea man. Some exotic genes entered the family stock through a great-great-great-grandfather, a Swedish mariner named Janas Winnburg, whom one is tempted to picture as a six-foot-plus red-headed Viking. Tom described his father George as a very intelligent person, with great determination. Because of the early death of his father, George had to start work at the age of 14 as an office boy earning five shillings a week, but continued his education in evening classes, reaching finally the grade of executive engineer in the Post Office. Although Tom’s mother Edith had trained as a teacher, she led a mainly domestic life, devoted to the upbringing of their four sons. Both parents were ‘loyal members of Baptist churches’, from whom their sons inherited the ‘Puritan work ethic’ (78)*. * Numbers in this form refer to entries in the bibliography at the end of the text.
