A charged particle which is allowed to accelerate must have relativisticbehavior because it is coupled to electromagnetic radiation which propagates atthe speed of light. We treat the simple steady-state situation of a chargedparticle moving in a circular orbit with counter-propagating plane wavesproviding the power which balances the energy radiated away by the acceleratingcharge. It is emphasized that only an electromagnetic arrangement, such as aCoulomb potential or a constant magnetic field, can provide the relativisticcentral force for the particle motion.
