We present a hybrid atom chip which combines a permanent magnetic film with amicromachined current-carrying structure used to realize a Bose-Einsteincondensate. A novel TbGdFeCo material with large perpendicular magnetizationhas been tailored to allow small scale, stable magnetic potentials forultracold atoms. We are able to produce 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates in amagnetic trap based on either the permanent magnetic film or thecurrent-carrying structure. Using the condensate as a magnetic field probe weperform cold atom magnetometry to profile both the field magnitude and gradientas a function of distance from the magnetic film surface. Finally we discussfuture directions for our permanent magnetic film atom chip.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to J.Phys.
