Study was performed to analyse the influence of salt and initial condition of drying on the shrinkage limit. Two bentonites with different swelling capacity were dried from three different initial conditions. In the first condition, the samples were dried from the liquid limit. In second and third conditions, samples were compacted and dried from their optimum moisture content. The study concludes that the shrinkage limit depends upon the pore water chemistry and initial condition of drying. With a rise in salt concentration the shrinkage limit increased. A comparison among all the methods indicated that the shrinkage limits obtained using conventional mercury displacement method were close to the values determined using first method. The shrinkage limit obtained from the second method was slightly higher than the shrinkage limit obtained from the first method. Lowest value of shrinkage limit obtained in the third method in which the sample was re-wetted and re-dried.S
