The present study examines the influence of variations in swell pressure due to moisture loss on the swell and collapse behaviour of residual kaolinitic soil specimens. Double oedometer test (DOT) results revealed that moisture loss from an initially dry soil reduces the swell pressure and renders it more collapsible; conversely, it increases the swell pressure of an initially wet soil and renders it expansive. Furthermore, the ratio of inundation pressure ( P ) to swell pressure ( P s) [( P/P s)] governs the nature of wetting induced volumetric strains. The swell and collapse magnitudes of the unsaturated kaolinitic soils at a given surcharge pressure are predicted from a unified equation (based on  P/P sratio). Likewise, a proposed equation predicts the swell pressure of desiccated kaolinitic soils (compacted soils that have experienced moisture loss).
