Predicting the motion of planing hulls accurately is significant in the improvement of hydrodynamic performance. In this paper, a new semi-empirical method based on Morabito’s empirical equations (named modified M-S method) is developed to predict the attitude and resistance of planing hulls in calm water. Moreover, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a planing hull with free sinkage and trim conditions are comprehensively investigated by the dynamic overset mesh method and rotation and translation method. The numerical simulation is based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with the SST  k-ω  turbulence model. And the interface of a two-phase flow is captured by the Volume of Fluid (VOF) scheme. The numerical results obtained by overset mesh method and rotation and translation method, the modified M-S method, and the Savitsky method are compared with experimental data, which shows good agreement.
