This study attempts to advance our knowledge about the roles of emotion and emotional abilities in public organizations. Specifically, the current study empirically explores a moderated mediation model in which fear mediates the relationships between perceptions of organizational politics and both job tension and turnover intention, and the emotional abilities included in emotional intelligence moderate these mediations. We tested the model in both the public and private sectors in an attempt to reveal sectorial similarities and differences. We validated the model in the public sector and demonstrated the value of considering the unique contribution of the four aspects of emotional intelligence separately rather than the cumulative contribution of all four dimensions. Our findings indicate that emotion does shape the well-being of public servants. Moreover, the findings shed light on differences in the contribution of emotion and emotional abilities in the public and the private sectors. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
