Undergraduate Management Information Systems majors are required to take a course in Decision Support systems. In such a course they need to learn about analysis and design of such systems. Typically, this material is presented as a lecture. Unfortunately, students come away with a few concepts but with little understanding of the complex and interconnected nature of this task. In this article we discuss the use of class exercises that require the students to perform the main tasks of analysis and design of a decision support system for a problem that they are quite familiar with. This problem pertains to the familiar task of assigning classes to specific rooms, a problem that most higher education students are familiar with. Significant benefits were observed when these in-class exercises were performed. Attendance improved significantly because these class assignments accounted for around 15% of the final grade. Student curiosity was aroused about decision support systems because they learned that such systems could be used to solve real problems. They learned about the interconnected nature of the task of analysis and design. Student feedback obtained over a span of two years suggests that the class exercises succeeded in many respects. Around 96% of respondents felt highly satisfied with the class work. Over 90% of respondents believed that the class work succeeded in conveying the complex nature of DSS, helped them understand the need to carry out analysis before starting out on design, and helped them understand the need to carry out detailed design before starting out on implementation. Around 93% felt that the class work should be continued in future offerings of the course.
