Information systems researchers have long relied on human judgment and decision-making (e.g., survey responses) while obtaining measures of constructs of interest. How people utilize external information in arriving at judgments is not entirely understood. Moreover, it is unclear if people can tell us what information they utilize, as well as how they weight that information, in arriving at a particular evaluative judgment. This paper reports the results of a research study designed to demonstrate techniques to objectively and subjectively determine decision strategies in an IS setting with a construct well known to IS researchers, user information satisfaction (UIS). Policy capturing was used to objectively determine a unique decision model (i.e., a linear combination) for each of our subjects. A second method was employed to subjectively determine each subject's decision model. We then compare the two to determine if our subjects could accurately specify which UIS attributes they utilize in assessing satisfaction.
