Highly porous carbonaceous material derived from polysaccharides possesses excellent potential for adsorption due to its porous structure. The present study is focused on the loading of nutrients and their application as slow release fertilizers. Urea was used as a model fertilizer to adsorb on porous material derived from corn starch, potato starch, pectin and alginic acid. The urea was loaded on a porous material by a simple immersion technique using concentrated aqueous urea solutions of different concentrations. The release rate of urea was studied by monitoring the release patterns at different time intervals. The adsorption of urea and its slow release behavior were significantly better in corn starch and pectin-based porous material. These two materials are potential candidates for use as base materials for slow-release fertilizers owing to their biodegradability, high loading capacity and excellent slow release patterns.
