Significance Aging and neurodegenerative processes induce the formation of waste substances in the brain. Some of these substances accumulate incorpora amylacea (CA). We reveal that CA are released from the brain into the cerebrospinal fluid and are present in the cervical lymph nodes, into which cerebrospinal fluid drains through the meningeal lymphatic system. We also show that CA can be phagocytosed by macrophages. We conclude that CA can act as waste containers and hypothesize that CA are involved in a mechanism that cleans the brain. We also postulate that CA may contain clinical markers of brain disorders and may also play significant roles in some brain autoimmune diseases. These last points merit further study due to their possible clinical implications.
