Significance From mammalian cells to microbes, cells need to be able to quickly respond to changes in their environment, e.g., to changes in nutrient availability. Since metabolic pools can rapidly deplete and fill within seconds and cellular metabolism is one of the first layers of response to nutrient starvation, we characterize here the immediate metabolic response after glucose starvation in yeast cells within seconds as well as hours. Our results reveal the predominant cellular metabolic pathways that are affected by the acute glucose withdrawal, and we demonstrate that bulk autophagy and lipid degradation via β-oxidation act in parallel to ensure energy maintenance and are critical for survival under acute glucose starvation conditions.
