Significance Lateral root organogenesis enables plant roots to branch and improve foraging for resources. Using a systems biology approach, we discovered expression of very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) biosynthesis pathway genes are induced downstream of PUCHI, a transcription factor controlling cell division and morphogenesis during lateral root formation. Furthermore, we report that regulation of the VLCFA biosynthesis pathway by PUCHI is conserved for both lateral root development and callus formation, the first step in in vitro plant regeneration.
