Significance Classical studies of gene activity in development focused on spatial limits due to the use of fixed tissues for analysis. The advent of live-imaging methods provides an opportunity to examine the temporal control of gene expression. Here, we used quantitative live-imaging methods to visualize dynamic shifts in the endogenous expression ofeve andftz pair-rule stripes in the earlyDrosophila embryo. We suggest that these temporal dynamics add to the complexity encoded by the segmentation gene network.
