Significance The selective estrogen receptor β (ERβ) agonist, LY3201, acts on enteric neuronal stem/progenitor cells, enhancing their capacity to generate enteric glial cells and neurons in vitro. Using two murine models of enteric nervous system damage, we showed that in vivo an ERβ agonist elicited accelerated reconstitution of the enteric neuron pool in the myenteric plexus. Our study suggests that selective ERβ agonists might be useful to promote neurogenesis in the damaged enteric nervous system.
