Significance Water and silica are quite important for human beings because they are the most abundant materials with tremendous biological, geological, and technological significance. They show similar density anomalies and crystalline structures but also have differences: Water crystallizes easily on cooling, but not silica, which has a significant impact on our planet. These similarities and differences have been known for a long time, but a clear microscopic explanation is still missing. Here, we successfully reveal the microscopic physical origin of the similarities and differences between water and silica, from the local symmetric arrangement of atoms in these liquids. Our finding indicates the importance of detailed characterization of low-energy local structures for understanding the properties of liquids interacting with directional bond.
