Nanometrically thin glassy films depart strikingly from the behavior of theirbulk counterparts. We investigate whether the dynamical differences betweenbulk and thin film glasses can be understood by differences in localmicroscopic structure. We employ machine-learning methods that have previouslyidentified strong correlations between local structure and particlerearrangement dynamics in bulk systems. We show that these methods completelyfail to detect key aspects of thin-film glassy dynamics. Furthermore, we showthat no combination of local structural features drawn from a very general setof two- and multi-point functions is able to distinguish between particles atthe center of film and those in intermediate layers where the dynamics arestrongly perturbed.
