Using the surface photometric analysis data for a well defined sample of 79nearby radio galaxies (z < 0.12), it is shown that the level of radio emissionassociated with an elliptical galaxy during the radio-loud phase is related tothe presence of large amounts of isophotal twist in its optical image. Inparticular, radio galaxies with P_408 > 3 x 10^{25} W/Hz appear to show apreference to be associated with elliptical hosts exhibiting an isophotal twistin excess of ~20 degrees.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, in press in Astronomy and Astrophysic
