This paper explores the important role of critical science, and in particularof post-colonial and decolonial theories, in understanding and shaping theongoing advances in artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence (AI) isviewed as amongst the technological advances that will reshape modern societiesand their relations. Whilst the design and deployment of systems thatcontinually adapt holds the promise of far-reaching positive change, theysimultaneously pose significant risks, especially to already vulnerablepeoples. Values and power are central to this discussion. Decolonial theoriesuse historical hindsight to explain patterns of power that shape ourintellectual, political, economic, and social world. By embedding a decolonialcritical approach within its technical practice, AI communities can developforesight and tactics that can better align research and technology developmentwith established ethical principles, centring vulnerable peoples who continueto bear the brunt of negative impacts of innovation and scientific progress. Wehighlight problematic applications that are instances of coloniality, and usinga decolonial lens, submit three tactics that can form a decolonial field ofartificial intelligence: creating a critical technical practice of AI, seekingreverse tutelage and reverse pedagogies, and the renewal of affective andpolitical communities. The years ahead will usher in a wave of new scientificbreakthroughs and technologies driven by AI research, making it incumbent uponAI communities to strengthen the social contract through ethical foresight andthe multiplicity of intellectual perspectives available to us; ultimatelysupporting future technologies that enable greater well-being, with the goal ofbeneficence and justice for all.
