The continuous development of new multiphase alloys with improved mechanicalproperties requires quantitative microstructure-resolved observation of thenanoscale deformation mechanisms at, e.g., multiphase interfaces. This callsfor a combinatory approach beyond advanced testing methods such as microscalestrain mapping on bulk material and micrometer sized deformation tests ofsingle grains. We propose a nanomechanical testing framework that has beencarefully designed to integrate several state-of-the-art testing andcharacterization methods: (i) well-defined nano-tensile testing of carefullyselected and isolated multiphase specimens, (ii) front&rear-sided SEM-EBSDmicrostructural characterization combined with front&rear-sided in-situ SEM-DICtesting at very high resolution enabled by a recently developed InSn nano-DICspeckle pattern, (iii) optimized DIC strain mapping aided by application of SEMscanning artefact correction and DIC deconvolution for improved spatialresolution, (iv) a novel microstructure-to-strain alignment framework todeliver front&rear-sided, nanoscale, microstructure-resolved strain fields, and(v) direct comparison of microstructure, strain and SEM-BSE damage maps in thedeformed configuration. Demonstration on a micrometer-sized dual-phase steelspecimen, containing an incompatible ferrite-martensite interface, shows howthe nanoscale deformation mechanisms can be unraveled. Discretelath-boundary-aligned martensite strain localizations transit over theinterface into diffuse ferrite plasticity, revealed by the nanoscalefront&rear-sided microstructure-to-strain alignment and optimization of DICcorrelations. The proposed framework yields front&rear-sided alignedmicrostructure and strain fields providing 3D interpretation of the deformationand opening new opportunities for unprecedented validation of advancedmultiphase simulations.
