Mainly due to loss of\udaquatic breeding sites, the great crested newt Triturus\udcristatus is amongst the fastest declining amphibian\udspecies in Europe. Focusing on the north-westerly\udlimit of the T. cristatus range, in the Scottish\udHighlands, we aimed to characterise habitat requirements\udand conservation needs of an isolated set of\udedge populations. We recorded 129 breeding pondrelated\udenvironmental parameters, and used a variable\udselection procedure followed by random forest\udanalysis to build a predictive model for the species’\udpresent occurrence, as well as for population persistence\udincorporating data on population losses. The\udmost important variables predicting T. cristatus\udoccurrence and persistence were associated with pond\udquality, pond shore and surrounding terrestrial habitat\ud(especially mixed Pinus sylvestris–Betula woodland),\udand differed from those identified in the species’ core\udrange. We propose that habitat management and pond\udcreation should focus on the locally most favourable\udhabitat characteristics to improve the conservation\udstatus and resilience of populations.
