We formulate a generic concept model for the deformation of a locallydisordered, macroscopically homogeneous material which undergoes irreversiblestrain softening during plastic deformation. We investigate the influence ofthe degree of microstructural heterogeneity and disorder on the concomitantstrain localization process (formation of a macroscopic shear band). It isshown that increased microstructural heterogeneity delays strain localizationand leads to an increase of the plastic regime in the macroscopic stress-straincurves. The evolving strain localization patterns are characterized andcompared to models of shear band formation published in the literature.
