Americans, or so a very English friend of mind found recent occasion to remark, are a lot like hobbits: you can learn all there is to know about them in a month, and they'll still surprise you after a hundred years. This singular homily on the mercurial mindset of the American public was not prompted by the election of Barack Obama a few short years after The Daily Mirror announced the 2004 election results with the headline "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?"? though many here in Blighty are still shaking their heads in disbelief that the Yankee electorate could so abruptly replace a bumbling, brutal boob of a tyrant with an enlightened philosopher king. The facile millenarian contours of this titanic clash, which spoke aptly to the temperament of our apocalyptically inclined times, are rapidly fading, even for those who invested genuine hope in the ideological deployment of yes-we-canism from the get-go. No, it was sparked by a more subtle event: an obscure Rasmussen survey whose results sent murmurs of bemusement rippling across both sides of the water. It was elegant in its simplicity, asking one question of a modest sample of American citizens: which is a better system, capitalism or socialism? Capitalism won by the hair on its chinny chin chin, with 53% of respondents rallying to the banner of the market, 20% flying the red flag, and 27% flummoxed by the conundrum (Rasmussen Reports 2009). That, of course, is my fanciful spin on it. The pollsters specifically declined to define the terms of the question, so there's no way to tell what the respondents really meant by their choices, what histories or tropes or conditions or possibilities they associated with either "system," and that ambiguity has been the focus of much of the ink subsequently spilled on the subject. It is a testament to the entrenched naturalization of capitalism as the inexorable, defining condition of America that these results provoked such intense speculation at all, and which inspired such a degree of incredulity in my supercilious comrade, who (echoing common sentiment
