15 páginas, 12 figuras, 3 tablas.During spring and summer 2003, we measured\uda variety of chemical and biological parameters in five\udmedium-sized, Mediterranean cage farms that exploit\udsemi-offshore conditions, and controlled the supply of\udfodder. The objective was to assess whether modern cage\udfarms proliferating at semi-offshore sites exert environmental\udimpact levels equivalent to the levels described\udfrom more traditional cage farms located in shallow,\udsheltered sites. In the water column, we examined the\udconcentration of dissolved inorganic nutrients and heterotrophic\udbacteria in both surface and near-bottom\udwater. At the bottom, we examined the concentrations\udof benthic chlorophyll a, phaeophytin and organic\udmatter in sediments, the granulometric structure of the\udsediment, and the taxonomic (at the family level)\udabundance of benthic macroinvertebrates. For most\udparameters, we found no substantial differences between\udfarm and control sites. Rather, most variation was explained\udas a function of depth (surface versus bottom\udwater) or season (spring versus summer conditions).\udDeviations of farm values from control values, when\udthey occurred, were small and did not indicate any significant\udimpact on either bacterioplankton or benthic\udchlorophyll. Only one of the five farms studied exerted a\uddetectable impact on the benthic macroinvertebrate\udcommunity immediately under the cages. These results\udsuggest that medium-sized fish farms located on semiexposed\udwestern Mediterranean coasts have fewer environmental\udimpacts than traditional fish farms located in\udshallow, sheltered sites. Impact characterization in these\udnew farms may require refinement of the standard\udapproach to deal with rapid dispersal of effluents and\udsub-lethal levels of environmental disturbance.These investigations have partially benefited from funds from\udtwo grant to M.M.
